What else can you do to keep kids active during the summer?

Many kids during the school year study real hard, however, once summer comes around if kids do not have something to do… many will be stuck on the TV screen or on their game consoles.
It is imperative that you get your kids out of the house and into hands-on outdoor and indoor activities. Summer Camps are an amazing way to keep them active, however many cannot afford them.

Another great way to keep your kids active all summer long and building their discipline and self confidence is through Karate. Some part time karate school will be closed during the summer time; however, many like AmeriKick Martial Arts in Staten Island are open all year round. They have Karate Summer Camps that include indoor and outdoor activities; from karate, gymnastics to weapons classes. Going on trips from the parks, beaches to museums and so much more.

Returning to School #1 Activity for Kids and Teens

As the Fall Season approaches, parents are preparing their children for a new school year. A big decision among parents is “What extracurricular activity will I put my child in?” Choices range from seasonal activities such as arts/music classes, sports and so on. The Problem with this is, children begin to get tired, lazy and find excuses not to go the distance and finish. On top of their daily worry of bullies, peer pressure and “too much homework”, it’s very easy to find them falling into depression and lack of motivation. It’s time for a change!

One of many parent’s goals is to keep their children busy. Some parents do not realize that adding a sport or class will only add stress and make it harder for them. Children need an activity that not only keeps them physically healthy but focused and disciplined, inside and outside of the activity. Sports are great for the body, but don’t stress the importance of discipline outside of the sport. Music and art classes allow the child to express themselves and condition their mind, but not their bodies. Karate offers not only physical health, but instills the discipline, respect and focus every child needs to help them in all aspects of life. Focus in school, respect of themselves and their elders, and confidence to help them achieve any and all goals.

Unfortunately more than half of sports start after school begins and finish before school ends.

Often, parents begin to create doubt and excuses as to why they should or should not enroll their kids into a karate program. A majority of all illnesses begin and arrive from stress. Karate teaches how to manage and control stress, anger, anxiety and so much more. All the Doctor visits and medication for treatments for anger management, attention deficit disorder and or hyperactive attention deficit disorder can equal very high bills with sometimes decent results. What is the alternative? Have your child enrolled into a life time of karate training that teaches them how to be a good person, almost stress free, confident, motivated and prepare them for what life has to offer. Many doctors strongly suggest karate as the treatment for many child disorders. It is the #1 natural cure for kids.

Can soccer, baseball, basketball, football and other seasonal sports treat all symptoms? Maybe one or two, then again how long will it last? Karate is not a seasonal Sport! It is a Life Skill. The commitment is only 2 classes a week, thirty minutes to a one hour a class. That’s two hours a week to start. With seven days in a week and twenty four hours in a day, using the excuse “It is not convenient for us to make an effort” is just that…an excuse.

AmeriKick Martial Arts has the best children’s, teen and adult programs. They have multiple locations and they are ready for the “School Season”.

Pick up the phone and call to schedule an appointment to start your child in the best program of their life.

Halloween Safety Seminar!!

Every year children are reported missing on Halloween. There are steps that you can take to help your family stay safe from abduction.

  1. Since almost everyone will have costumes, you should have a password that you tell your kids to memorize just in case they get mixed up with another child. For instance; the password is “Scooby Doo went to the moon”; child got lost by accident, but remembers the password. A stranger comes over and tells him your parents are waiting for you over there, Child answers “what’s the password? They obviously will not know it and make something up, “turtle”.. Child remembers that the password is “Scooby Do went to the moon”, and runs to someone for help.
  2. Teach your kids what to do if they get lost: “if you get lost run inside a store and ask for help from someone with a “uniform” (people who work there).  “Please help someone is trying to take me away, that’s not my mom/dad”.
  3. Make sure your kids know their parent’s phone number:  If they get lost and ask for help, they will need to know the phone number that they can reach you on.  Since majority of parents have cell phones, and are often not home during the day and or night time (on special occasions), it would be best for your kids to know your cell phone number.
  4. It is very important that your child learns how to get around their own neighborhood. Just in case they get lost.
  5. Have a very close relationship with some neighbors so your kids have friends to go trick or treating with. Do NOT let your kids go Trick or Treating Alone!!  It is best to go with group of people.
  6. If your kids have cell phone’s make sure they take them along. If they lose it don’t be upset at them, the situation could be a lot worse.
  7. Teach your kids their House Address!
  8. Teach them how important it is to call 911!
  9. Be sure to take them to a Karate Classes at the very least 2x a week at AmeriKick!!!
  10. AmeriKick has award winning classes for kids and adults.

Pick your location and call to set up a introductory lesson.

Bully Season = Bully Prevention

With children now in school it is an ideal time to discuss Bullying. What is it? How do you recognize it? How do you avoid it? And as a last resort how do you defend against it?

Bullying can happen anywhere and at anytime. In school, on the bus, in the playground, over a friend’s house, on the internet and on Facebook. Bullies can be any age. The can be individuals and groups. They can be male and females alike. Bullies usually have a lack of self-confidence in themselves and look for weaker people to push around to give them a sense of power. Ignorance and fear is another ingredient to bullying. When people do not understand the differences in others they become afraid and the result of that is being mean and aggressive towards those differences.

Using the R.A.D. system is a great tool in combating Bullies. R.A.D stands for recognize, avoid and defend. Using these 3 steps can help in most Bullying cases.

Step one-Recognize. Being able to recognize what bullies look for is a great way to deter the bullies from the beginning. Since bullies look for weaker people, do not show signs of weakness. Stand up tall and straight, don’t hunch or slouch. Look in peoples’ eyes when you talk to them. Speak in a clear and strong voice. Be confident in your actions.

Step two-Avoid. The first step to avoid a bully is to just ignore it. Name calling and screaming does not hurt you physically. They are just words. By ignoring the words and walking away takes away the aggressive reaction that bullies are looking for. Bullies want a confrontation. The second step to avoid a bully is to use a vocal response such as “Stop” or “Leave me alone”. If this is done a strong and authoritative voice, most bullies will just leave you alone and move on. The third step is to tell someone about the bully. You can tell a teacher, principal, a parent or an adult. Remember you are not being a coward by telling someone about the bully. You are actually demonstrating courage.

Step three-Defend. This is the last resort. However, it may come to this step. If a bully physically tries to hurt or attack you then you must defend yourself. You use your martial arts skills in the most effective way possible. Remember to first try to use techniques that will control or avoid the bully such as pushes, locks, sweeps and throwing techniques. Use your striking and hurting techniques as a last resort since this may cause serious injury and you may become responsible and held accountable for your actions.

Unfortunately Bullying is a real occorance that must be dealt with. By talking about it, making a plan of action and using the R.A.D. principle you will have a greater success of overcoming bullies.

How to Prevent Child Abduction

Due to the tragic incident in Brooklyn, AmeriKick Martial Art School in Staten Island is hosting a Kidnapping Prevention seminar. It is open to the public and it is free. Please call in advance to reserve your kid(s) spots on the floor. We will be covering: who to talk to, family passwords, how important it is to do what parents tell them to do, who to trust, whether or not to get into a car/house and so much more.

Kids are very gullible and are easily persuaded. This is due to lack of knowledge when it comes to situations where they are confronted by elders that they may or may not know. For instance, a boy has his name on his t-shirt and a elderly man/woman comes up and says “Hi Timmy (name on shirt), your mom asked me to pick you up from school today, I’m your uncle bobby” or something like it. If it is persuasive enough for the child, they may go with them. If you gave him a password such as a code-word/phrase, for example: “fire started” etc., this incident may have been prevented. However, if the boy was taught this, he realized that the man/woman is an imposter.. now what? What will he do? Tell a teacher, run into a store and yell for help from the staff, call 911 if he has a phone etc.

There is a lot a child needs to know to be safe when parents are not around. Please pick up the phone and call to reserve your spot at the Kidnapping Prevention Seminar.

Parent’s, does your child lose focus within Minutes? What can you do?

It is very hard to understand how kids act and react at certain points in their life long journey to becoming mature. For instance, in classrooms kid’s tend to wonder off into a daze imagining things instead of listening and taking notes. However, given a Math problem, doing spin kicks or playing their Xbox, their mind goes to work. Fingers start moving, their focus and awareness is at its max etc..

Why do kids lose focus, when and how to get their attention back and keep it:

After teaching over 1,000+ at AmeriKick Martial Arts, it stereotypically seems to be  that kids only focus longer on things that are interesting (eye-catching, physical fast movements and mind exercising materials) .

For home chore’s and homework related activities, you should add a goal to their finish (a prize of some sort; if it no longer works, it’s time to put your kids into karate).  Remember, the prize doesn’t have to be something big or expensive, but something that is very big in value to your kid’s. (Your not going to karate, I’m telling sensei that you are failing in school, thus not graduating to your new belt, etc)  These are sentimental values that mean the world to your kids.   Our student’s receive achievement stripes for doing chores at home, academic stripes for high grades in school. Give your kids what they want and need: Karate, self-confidence and discipline!

Public and private schools teach kids about book smarts, we teach our students about LIFE smart! Karate is NOT a seasonal sport, it is a LIFE Lesson!

Give your child and early start to success, call us at AmeriKick Martial Arts in Staten Island today to schedule your qualification course at 718.524.0244.  You can also visit our website to manually schedule your 1st class. We also have 3 school in Brooklyn (address is on the website)

Defend yourself against Street Attack’s

Some of us, if not many have already experienced an attack outside. And other’s may be a victim of an attack one day.  Hopefully not! No one should be waiting until it happens to them before they decide to take lesson’s to prevent it from happening again.

I’ve personally have been in more than 3 street attacks. 2 of which were group attack’s.  Thank god I’ve been taking karate lesson’s and did wrestling for a few year.  I’ve taken a few seminar’s from Knife to multiple attackers to verbal argument.  All instructor’s have said the same thing, “don’t make the situation work!”

Sensei Alan Romero is an amazing instructor. I’ve learned my knife self defenses and street attack self defenses through him.  I just wish I’ve known what I know now when I was attacked.  Now I feel more confident and more alert about what is going on around me; for instance: If someone asked me for the time at 2:00 am in the morning (night-time), I  would consider myself am an idiot for replying. Or if someone asks you if you speak english, or if you have $ so i can get my baby some milk? don’t answer, RUN the other way. Who doesn’t have a phone, or a watch on them now a days? These type of questions are a welcoming sign to an attack waiting to happen.

This is such a small thing, however, it had saved me from a few encounters.

On Friday, May 13th 2011, Sensei Alan Romero will be teaching a Street Attack’s Self Defense Seminar at AmeriKick Staten Island. The address is 341A Sand Lane, Staten Island NY 10305. The seminar begins at 7:15pm and ends at 8:45pm. The Fee is $25 per person, $20 each for 2 or more friends/family members. Wear comfortable clothes (no karate uniform.

Every adult is encouraged to make this event. Do it for yourself, and do it for the people who love you.  This seminar is open to the public, invite your husband, wife, kids (ages 13+) please, co workers, bosses, etc.

Call 718.524.0244 to reserve your spot. You can visit our website: www.amerikicksi.com to take self-defense classes. Please leave a reply with your comment’s. You are encouraged to Share this post with your friends and family.
